Amita Gupta is a professor of Early Childhood Education, Chair of the Department of Teaching, Learning, & Culture in the School of Education at the City College of New York in New York City, and on the Doctoral Faculty of Urban Education at the City University of New York Graduate Center. Dr. Gupta has been in the field of early childhood education for almost 30 years, and has extensive experience as an early childhood teacher, school administrator and teacher educator in India and the US. Prior to joining CUNY she was Associate Director of a Manhattan based early education school for ten years.
Dr. Gupta serves as an early childhood consultant and on the Board of Directors for schools in both countries, and continues to offer culturally responsive professional development consultations in the areas of school leadership, teacher preparation, curriculum design and development for schools.
Amita Gupta's scholarship is focused on cross-cultural perspectives on early childhood teacher preparation and practice in the context of Asia. Her research is informed by postcolonial theory, international and comparative education, globalization of education, and socio-cultural-historical constructivism. As a Fulbright Senior Researcher she conducted a multi-country comparative study of early education in Asia. She has authored several articles, book chapters and books.
