It’s a Sunday morning and you are at a grocery store with your child and suddenly your child stops you and starts demanding a toy. You firmly deny him. However, your child is not in the mood for denial and starts crying in front of everyone and creates a scene. Such tantrums are a part and parcel of every parent’s lives. In the present era, several day care centers and pre-schools in Mumbai are equipping parents to deal with their child’s tantrums.

With that being said, it’s necessary for you as a parent to have a few tricks up your sleeves especially when such tantrums are enacted in public spaces. Well, search no more! Here are few tried and tested and effective tips to emerge triumphant in such situations:

1. Distract Them

Their short span of attention proves a boon for us as they can be easily distracted. Imagine you are in a supermarket with your kid and all of a sudden, he wants to buy that one expensive toy which you know he will get bored within a day or two. The best thing to do is to divert his attention. Hand over the trolley to him to move around while shopping, give him the cash to pay at the cashier, ask him to read the ingredients of the bread and check the expiry date and voila, he will soon forget that the toy even existed.

2. Make It A Game

Turn everything that you are doing into a game. Going to do laundry? Ask him to match the clothes with the same colour together and challenge him to do it under 2 minutes. Cooking food? Let your child play the role of a MasterChef and make him taste the food (along with you, of course) and give his expert opinions.

3. Speak Softly

4. Hug Them

This might not seem to work in your mind, but it is an effective technique to implement. Give them a bear hug and don’t let go of them for at least 35 seconds. This will automatically calm their nerves and help them speak to you rationally.

5. Carry Food

Hunger is the main reason why kids feel restless. Always have his favourite chocolate or snack with you and give it to him to placate him. Be careful not to spoil your child with this behaviour and use it wisely.

With the advent of working culture, parents are now relying upon day care centers and pre-schools to guide their children in their developmental stage. Now that you are equipped with the techniques to pave your way through your child’s tantrums, we would like to heartily wish you Happy Parenting from our side.
